John Alexander McGeoch è noto per essere stato il chitarrista dei Magazine (1977–1980), Siouxsie and the Banshees (1980–1982), Visage (1979–1980), Armoury Show (1983–1986) e Public Image Ltd (1986–1992). È stato descritto come uno dei chitarristi più influenti della sua generazione e nel 1996 è stato inserito da Mojo tra i “100 più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi”.
E’ stato un innovatore con il suono puro della sua chitarra, facendo scelte molto precise che di solito erano meravigliosamente semplici ; per questo motivo è stato citato come influenza fondamentale da Johnny Marr , Jonny Greenwood e Ed O’Brien (Radiohead), The Edge , John Frusciante , Robert Smith , Steve Albini , Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard) , James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers) e Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction).
E’ stato in attività per poco più di 15 anni prima di ritirarsi dalle scene ed è morto nel sonno a 48 anni per una crisi epilettica.
